The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health, MercyOne North Iowa, Prairie Ridge Integrated Behavioral Healthcare, and the Mason City Youth Task Force, have been awarded a $200,000 Rural Communities Opioid Response Program planning grant, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Read more. The team will work together to create a plan to bring more substance abuse counselors, mental health and medical providers to North Iowa. The project’s focus areas are prevention and treatment with an overall goal of preventing opioid and substance abuse disorder whenever possible, while providing more access to treatment services in North Iowa. “Rural communities continue to face several challenges in accessing ... prevention, treatment and recovery services,” said Tom Morris, associate administrator for the federal Office of Rural Health Policy. “Over half of rural counties nationwide lack a provider who is waivered to prescribe buprenorphine (a medication used in combination with therapy to help people reduce or quit their use of opiates)."
