Drug Deaths reach record high

Being addicted to drugs can lead to so many serious dangers. A lot of people could not keep doing what they used to do before they tried out drugs. Some of them would quit school or work, there are those who prefer to commit crime, while others go to the streets and totally put their lives to waste. This is a sad reality when drugs is involved. But the worse thing is, when it leads to death

In Scotland, the number of drug-related deaths have reached its highest records. As a result of this, the government is implementing intensive measures and will have a person-centred approach so that treatment and support services address people’s wider health and social needs. This shows that recovery centers are very important to help those are in need and save more lives.

Drug deaths in Scotland are at their worst level since records began, new figures show.

There were 934 drug-related deaths registered in 2017, 66 more than the previous year, an increase of 8%.

In Dundee, there were 57 drug-related deaths in 2017, up from 38 the previous year, and 23 in 2007.

A majority of the Dundee deaths were related to powerful opiates, with 51 of the 57 deaths involving heroin, morphine, methadone or buprenorphine.

Benzodiazepines, which include Valium and etizolam – also known as “street Valium” – were found to be a factor 44 of the deaths. Cocaine was present in seven of the deaths and alcohol in five, but there were no fatalities linked to ecstasy or amphetamines in Dundee.

Joe Fitzpatrick MSP, the new Scottish public health minister, said Holyrood would adopt “a person-centred approach so that treatment and support services address people’s wider health and social needs”.
